Dust Storm Safety Tips for Tucson Residents?

4/19/2022 (Permalink)

We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Pima County.

Our team in Northeast Tucson and Oro Valley/Marana East restores storm damage each year in Tucson. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) cautions that dust storms, or "haboobs," can occur at any time of the year. Dust storms can reduce visibility to near zero in seconds, often causing deadly car crashes. Here are some suggestions for driving on wet roads or during a dust storm from the AZDPS:

  • Wear your seatbelt!
  • Immediately check traffic around your vehicle (front, back, sides) and begin slowing down.
  • Completely exit the highway if you can. Do not wait until poor visibility to pull off the roadway.
  • DO NOT STOP in a travel lane or emergency lane. Pull completely off the paved portion of the roadway.
  • Turn off all vehicle lights. You don't want others to follow you by using your lights as a guide.
  • Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake
  • Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelts buckled
  • Be patient and wait for the storm to pass
