Gray Water Isn’t Always Gray

Water from rain or other storms is classified as “gray water” because it contains bacteria, microbes, dust, pollen, and other materials from the outdoors. Despite the color name, this water can be clear, gray, brown, or even a reddish color (from dirt or algae).

Any standing water gets more contaminated over time. Bacteria and viruses continue to grow, and mold spores need only a little excess water to open and allow mold colonies to bloom and thrive.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) explain that mold starts growing within 24 to 48 hours in clean water. Mold is likely already present in gray water.
